Paper bags into confessions

Artist Trong Gia Nguyen is no stranger to the allure of eco-art making. For his latest body of work, the Brooklyn based artist has upcycled ordinary paper grocery bags into a pair of religious icons. Called “Portable Confessionals,” the paper bags have been intricately cut with the ornate opens which can be found on confessional booths in the Catholic church.

The quirky installation consists of two of the portable paper confessionals, positioned across from each other on the gallery wall. Hung at shoulder height, the recycled bags suggest a sinner and saint to step inside to repent and absolve, with the privacy screens being just enough to cover each participant’s face.

The paper bag confessionals are part of a solo show currently on display at QF Gallery in East Hampton, New York.
